THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE THERAPY

You may not know what kind of massage you should get. No problem! We will create a plan together. Every session with me is personalized to your needs and may change to suit your body or mind at each appointment. That is the beauty of massage therapy.

Your massage may include several modalities, or massage techniques, based on your goals. Below are some of the skilled techniques that I may incorporate into your massage session.

Cancer/Oncology Massage

Everyone can benefit from massage. Especially someone going through cancer treatment.

Oncology Massage takes into consideration changes in the body during and after cancer treatments. There are unique needs to consider and specialized techniques that can support someone living with cancer. Advanced training ensures that massage therapy is beneficial to your health while going through any step of the way from diagnosis, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and beyond.

Tell me where you are today and I will create the space you need. This may include postsurgical or radiation scar tissue treatment, pain management, flexibility training, lymphatic drainage and other massage therapies, strategies to return to activities you enjoy, and importantly, a comfortable, relaxing environment for you to just BE.

Lymphedema Therapy

As a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT), I help people with swelling issues including lymphedema, lipedema, immune issues, and inflammatory conditions. I work together with your healthcare team to achieve the best results possible.

Lymphedema Therapy includes a type of massage called Manual Lymph Drainage. This is one step of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), a treatment protocol designed for people with lymphedema and other swelling disorders. CDT includes patient education, skin care and infection prevention, exercise and elevation, compression with bandages, pumps or garments, and manual lymph drainage.

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is an abnormal collection of lymphatic fluid in the tissues just beneath the skin. This swelling commonly occurs in the arm or leg, but it may also occur in other areas of the body. Lymphedema develops when a body region, where lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes are missing or impaired, becomes overloaded with lymphatic fluid. This can occur from surgery, radiation, or other events, causing secondary lymphedema. In some cases, lymphedema can occur from hereditary or genetic abnormalities that cause malformation of the lymphatic system. This is called primary lymphedema.

Lymphatic fluid is normally transported in our body by an extensive network of vessels and nodes. When these vessels are damaged or malformed, there is a risk that lymphatic fluid will not be adequately transported and may result in fluid backing up in body tissues. When fluid congests in the tissue, swelling occurs. This swelling is called lymphedema.

Manual Lymph Drainage

I have advanced training in lymphatic techniques including manual lymph drainage.

Manual lymph drainage (MLD) is a gentle massage technique that is performed in a specific sequence to encourage the movement of lymph fluid in the body. MLD effectively reduces traumatic and post-surgical swelling and can provide symptomatic relief of migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, stress, fatigue and more. MLD also induces general relaxation and detoxification. Manual lymph drainage is one step of Complete Decongestive Therapy, a treatment protocol administered by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT), designed for people with lymphedema and other swelling disorders.

Myofascial Massage

Myofascial massage is a technique used to treat injuries and discomfort, reducing pain and increasing range of motion. Myofascial massage differs from other types of massage in that it targets the fascia - the membrane surrounding muscles - rather than the muscle itself. Since fascia completely encases every muscle in the body, imbalances in the fascia can have serious effects on your range of motion and comfort level. While other forms of massage can overlook the fascia, myofascial massage focuses specifically on releasing tension in this important membrane.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is a very relaxing and therapeutic style of bodywork. It combines oils or lotion with an array of strokes such as rolling, kneading, and percussion to help the body improve its circulation. The benefits of this type of bodywork are wide-ranging and include relief from aches and pains, decreased stress levels in the body, enhanced mental clarity, increased sense of well-being and greater flexibility.
